The relationship between fish and health is the central theme of the research, being developed by a consortium of research institutions that includes the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (USP), the project’s headquarters institution, in co-execution with the Fisheries Institute (IP-APTA), from the Department of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo, the University of Mogi das Cruzes (UMC) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).

In addition to research institutions, Brazilian companies, such as Polinutri and Neogen, and foreign companies, such as Biomar (Norway), Veramaris (Netherlands), Lesaffre (France) and AquaHana (United States), participate in the project. Among the government bodies involved are the Agricultural Research Support Foundation (FUNDAG) and the São Paulo Agribusiness Technology Agency (APTA). The project also has Dr. Albert G. J. Tacon – a researcher active in several countries on the subject – as a visiting researcher on the project.

The Fish for Health Research Nucleus explores and leverages the strengths of each partner institution, including the mandate and connections with government research and extension centers, in order to clarify the benefits to human health of increasing fish consumption, as well as in the application of public policies and dietary recommendations for fish for consumers in São Paulo and Brazil.
