The Fish for Health Research Center is part of a proposal approved by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP), started in October 2022.  

It is articulated in a Problem-Oriented Research Center in São Paulo (NPOP), within the scope of FAPESP’s Science for Development notice, which seeks to solve problems and challenges faced by the State, through applied research.

Mission   

The Nucleus’s mission is to promote the consumption of fish and fortified aquaculture products as healthy alternatives to red meat, processed meat and fast foods, helping to combat obesity and coronary heart disease in the State of São Paulo and Brazil.

What is Fish?

Any animal or plant that normally lives in fresh or salt water and is used for human food.

Includes fish, crustaceans, chelonians and aquatic plants such as shellfish, mussels, fish, shrimp, crabs, crabs and others.

According to FAO, the average apparent consumption of fish in the world in 2022 is 20.24kg, while in Brazil it is 8.02kg.

According to the 2017/2018 Family Budget Survey (POF), the annual consumption of fish by Brazilians is 6kg. 

Eat fish once or twice a week, which corresponds to approximately 200 to 300g per week or approximately 12kg per year, to benefit cardiovascular health, with an emphasis on the intake of fatty acids as recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and the American Heart Association. Frequent fish consumption is recommended by several countries and a vast scientific literature associates it with protection against several diseases.
