Fish for Health at COP30

Nutritionist and researcher Dr. Jéssica Levy participated in COP30 (the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – UNFCCC), held in Belém, Pará, in the side event organized by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Global Action Network Sustainable Food from Oceans and Inland Waters for Food Security and Nutrition, entitled “Sustainable Aquatic Food Systems: A People-Centered Approach for Planetary and Human Health,” held on November 11.

Hosted for the first time in the Amazon, COP30 reinforced the central role of sustainable food systems in global climate discussions, in alignment with the Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2030) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the panel, Dr. Jéssica highlighted the importance of communication and scientific dissemination, as well as food and nutrition education tailored to different audiences—especially populations in situations of social vulnerability—emphasizing the role of fish in public health strategies, food security, and sustainability.

The event brought together key leaders, including Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family and the Fight Against Hunger, Wellington Dias; Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen; the UN Global Compact Deputy Secretary-General, Sanda Ojiambo; representatives of the Nordic Council of Ministers, such as Nina Marika Aagaard; and Bente Torstensen, Director of Nofima (Norway). The session was moderated by Anita Utheim Iversen, from Norway’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and leader of the Global Action Network Sustainable Food from Oceans and Inland Waters for Food Security and Nutrition.
