Fish for Health at the SOCESP Congress of Cardiology

The 46th Congress of the São Paulo State Society of Cardiology (SOCESP) was held from June 4 to 8, 2026, at the Transamerica Expo Center in São Paulo. The event is the largest cardiology meeting in Latin America and brought together leading specialists and healthcare professionals for an extensive program of lectures and research presentations.

The Fish for Health Research Center (NPPS) was invited to participate in the session “Fish for Cardiovascular Health: Scientific Evidence Served at the Table – What Should I Tell My Patient?” as part of the 31st SOCESP Symposium on Nutrition in Cardiology, which integrates cardiology and nutrition, fostering an in-depth discussion on how diet affects the cardiovascular system.

The session on fish brought together NPPS researchers and SOCESP professionals to address a range of relevant topics regarding the beneficial effects of fish consumption, including recent research findings on the nutrients that make fish unique for human nutrition and health. Various subjects were presented and discussed, including the advantages of fish compared with other protein sources, its purchase price for consumers, the level of processing of fish products available on the market, consumption frequency, fish and cardiovascular health, pregnancy and essential nutrients, among others.

The Fish for Health Project is advancing into its fourth year of applied research focused on promoting the consumption of fish, whether obtained through capture fisheries or aquaculture, for the benefit of consumers in the state of São Paulo and throughout Brazil. Having achieved key research milestones, including (a) a market and consumer profile study, (b) the quantification of nutrients and potential contaminants in fish available on the market, and (c) nutrient enrichment of farmed fish meat, current research efforts are more strongly focused on the use of fish co-products to develop lower-cost products for consumers, as well as on communicating research findings and the benefits of fish consumption through media and outreach events.

The Fish for Health Project is a co-funded, multi-institutional consortium involving universities, the Government of the State of São Paulo, and private companies to conduct applied research addressing concrete societal challenges. The project operates as a Science for Development Center under the objectives of FAPESP, the São Paulo Research Foundation.

Updates on the progress of the Fish for Health Project can be found on the project’s website (www.pescadoparasaude.org) and social media channels.
